Abstract

The  good  properties exhibited by ceramic materials, such as;   corrosion  resistance,  the  resistance  to  oxidation  at high  temperatures, the  capacity of its  resistance to wear and the low relative density have  make  them an especially attractive material for use for insulation of combustion chamber of an automotive engine block. The  limitations of ceramics materials in  the  area  of low  fracture toughness can be assuaged by using various methods. This paper  presents   a  critical  survey of  some  of  the  existing materials used  for  insulation of combustion chamber of automotive engine block, some  existing ceramic coating techniques, some  existing strengthening mechanisms of ceramic  materials used  for insulation of automotive engine block with emphasis  on  methodologies, strengths  and  weaknesses.
