Abstract

The hydration of finely ground fused periclase was studied under conditions close to the hydration conditions of the refractory castables matrix. It was shown that periclase hydration occurs in two stages with an induction period, the time of which depends on the hydration conditions. It was shown that the presence of a hydraulic (high alumina cement) or chemical (Lithopix P5) binder in the system significantly slows down the hydration of periclase and makes it possible to develop and use periclase, including periclase-carbon refractory castables. It has been established that the content of Mg(OH)2 reaches 17.1 wt. % during hydration of pure MgO for 72 hours. It has been proven that the use of a chemical or hydraulic binder reduces the brucite formed amount to 5.5 and 0.6 wt. %, respectively. Ill. 17. Ref. 24. Tab. 4.
